ANOTHER AWESOME BOOK FAIR AT ADL LAST WEEK!!!!!!

Another successful Book Fair is under our belts at ADL.  Total sales for the four day sale were approximately $2500.00 which included about $41.00 by All For Books.  This was used to purchase some books for the ADL Learning Center (Library) using the librarian's wishlist.  We thank everyone for their contributions to the All For Books program this year.
The winner of the Golden Ticket raffle was 6th grader, Aidan Haggerty and he won the book of his choice. Congratulations Aidan!

Thank you to the peer leadership helpers who helped with set up, organization, poster making and other odd jobs to make our fair a success.
And, thank you to the students who also made posters with Caitlin Classen prior to the fair.
The fair could not be a success without our parent volunteers who help keep it running throughout the week. Thank you to each of you for all your help!
Thank you to Caitlin Classen for all her help with the fair and all her work generating enthusiasm for the fair, too!
Finally, a HUGE thank you to our Book Fair coordinators again this year, Chris Catterton and Tracey Williams!  It could never have happened without all their hard work, expertise, coordination and enthusiasm! All of ADL thanks you both very much!

Happy Holidays to all!

Hello ADL Families!

On Saturday, October 26th beginning at 9 am and lasting until approximately 11:15 am, we will be doing our Beautification Projects for this year at ADL.  We will be cleaning out the raised flower beds in the front of the school and adding soil to them as well as the raised beds in the back of the school.  We will be planting bulbs and any plants anyone would like to donate to ADL as you are cleaning out your own flower beds at home.  We are aiming for lots of color in the beds throughout the growing season.  Bulbs and soil will be provided, but again if you have any at home you are looking to donate, please bring along.  Bring your own shovels, rakes, gardening tools and wheelbarrows, etc.  When we are finished, a light lunch will be provided. Please bring your students with you, but do not drop them off for them to be on their own.  The students are great workers and this project will add to their pride in the ADL School.  Let's hope for a sunny day!  Hope to see everyone there!  Thank you!

Looking for volunteers to help with activity breaks during NECAP week, Oct 8-10

Hi, Parents,

Principal Laurie Singer is hoping to get some additional parent help during the NECAP testing window of October 8-10.  They're looking for some folks who would be willing to come in from 11:00-12:30 to help run/monitor activities for students -- maybe walking, recess, mat ball, art work, etc. The idea is that students get about an hour of activity as well as lunch for a nice break between the testing sessions. Help on one or more days will be appreciated.

If you're interested, please contact Mrs. Singer or Barb Edwards - http://www.ccsuvt.org/adl/staff-directory/.

ADL Parents as Partners Monthly Meeting Minutes - August 29, 2013

ADL Parents as Partners Links:

WELCOME
Attendees: Kelley Charland, Paul McLaughlin, Laurie Singer (principal), DeAnn Charron, Mindy Diebler, Nancy Bissonnette, Gabrielle Smith, Lorelei Rodgers, Leah Joly

PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS:
We’ve had two days of school so far this year. We’ve grown by about 17 students since last year. (Anecdote about overflowing the bleachers this week.) One complexity is that the number of students with IEPs has jumped significantly (IEP=Individual Education Plan).
The kickoff assembly was great, and the students did a wonderful job. The peer leaders did a skit to introduce the social contract. The students are building their social contract for the year. When done, all the students will sign and commit for the year. In the past, the kids have signed a large sheet of paper. This year, however, each student will write a short statement on a slip of paper, and we’ll collect those papers for display. The statements will also be available at the student-led conferences.
Another part of the first assembly was a time to describe the activities you could get involved in, and they had a time where each student physically moved to a part of the gym to be next to a sign for some activity to be involved in. No one was allowed to just stay on the bleachers. Full-blown club sign-ups should start as early as next week.
One other note is that the sixth graders will be adding to the 1-to-1 device program, and they’ll be getting Chromebooks. This group won’t be carrying them around just yet, but we hope to grow in that direction.

Need 6th grade parent volunteers for 6th Grade Summer Olympics

Jamie Caron, one of our 6th grade teachers, writes:

The 6th Grade Summer Olympics, an ADL tradition, will take place Friday, June 14th from 9:30 to 12:00 (I know ... pretty late notice). We always need a few extra people to run an event and it would be great if we can get some parent volunteers. We only need a few. Let me know if you are interested (jcaron@ccsuvt.org).

The budget vote passed! This means we can move ahead with more “laptop” computers for next year’s 6th-graders. We think we’ll shift to “Chrome books” which are more current tech.
One of our ADL students, Drexel, won a Google Doodle prize for his artwork, and we had a great assembly yesterday. He’s in the running now for a national award, and we’re encouraging everyone to go vote.
We’re working on forming team assignments for next year, and we’re looking forward to orientations for next year’s 6th-graders.

FINANCIAL REPORT: As of April 29, 2013, we have $2695.81. This reflects a deposit on April 29, 2013, of $115.00 from Box Tops. Big thanks to the families who turned in box tops and made this possible!

Events planned are: Little Mailbox Gifts on M, W, F; Yoga and Breakfast on T; Zumba on W; Hand massage and Luncheon on Th; Daily Riddles and Raffles. This all takes place next week! Ø      The ADL Parent Volunteer Form has been updated for next year with the link to the Knowledge Base provided so that parents can see exactly what they are volunteering for, in most cases.
Ø      Mints have been purchased for the 8th grade Science NECAPS.
Ø      There is a Promotion Night Committee working hard to get that evening organized! Thank you to Patty LaRose-Kent for heading this up!

NEW BUSINESS:
Ø      Volunteers are needed on Friday, May 24th, to help serve food at the Memorial Day BBQ. Hours are 10:45-12:30. Volunteers would need to pay for their lunch if they choose to eat. Please contact Laurie or Barb in the front office to sign up!
Ø      Kelley is in need of a co-facilitator for Parents as Partners next year. I need to begin to pass the torch to another parent as next year is my final year at ADL. Anyone who is interested, please email Kelley at the above address to learn more. Thank you!

OTHER ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION?
Ø      Kevin Barber was contacted by the Vermont Lake Monsters about a way to earn some money. The idea is to use the money to start building an account for trips. The work is to get our parents to sell tickets. Each ticket sells for $6, but we keep $3 of that. There’ll be a 3-week window to sell the tickets starting on May 16th. We can sell them independently and also at our events (concerts, track meets, etc., or even farmers’ market ...).
We’re looking for some parents who would be interested manning ticket sales at the events and/or take some to sell independently.
Laurie Singer will check on some more of the logistics, and we think we’ll work on lining up parents to help with this.

WAYS TO EARN MONEY FOR ADL:
Ø      Please go online and register or reregister your Price Chopper Advantedge card for this school year. The website is www.pricechopper.com and you need to click on the consumer link in the Tools for Schools section of the website.

Ø      PLEASE REMEMBER TO CONTINUE TO TURN IN BOX TOPS TO THE FRONT OFFICE! THANK YOU! Each box top with the logo is worth 10¢, and that adds up quickly. Just go online and Google “box tops” to learn more and see pictures.

Our next meeting date is June 6, 2013 at 6:30 pm, followed immediately by School Report Night at 7 pm. Thank you for coming!

PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS:
§         We’ve done more work on the action plan to incorporate some of the action steps from the improvement plan we wrote for the State to address a “check mark” in Math for some students. We’re adjusting the way we’ll do summer school this year, and we’ll focus it on two 2-week sessions – one session for 5-6 and one for 7-8 – to help fill gaps and do some pre-teaching for the next grade level. We’ll build some fun activities into the weeks.
§         Another area of concern from the fall NECAPs was our special ed students, and we’ll be working to understand what more we can do to support those students.
§         We’re beefing up the student leadership program to ensure they have a voice in how things go.
§         We’re further adjusting our behavior programs to make them more incentive based (and not only consequence based).
§         Looking ahead to next year, we’ll transition to the new Common Core assessment base.
§         There’ll be more on School Report Night (June 6).

FINANCIAL REPORT: As of April 1, 2013, we have $2580.81. This reflects a deposit of $87.00 from Hannaford’s Helps Schools on March 26th, 2013. Final profit on GASP was $133.26. This is reflected in our separate GASP account.

FOLLOW-UP BUSINESS:
Ø      A huge thank you to the GASP committee and parent volunteers for a wonderful job on the evening this year! I know it was a huge success and your hard work is very appreciated. Has the Knowledge Base for GASP been updated?
Ø      I am still working on making sure the Knowledge Base update is done for the Book Fair

NEW BUSINESS:
Ø      Work on Staff Appreciation Week is beginning. Elizabeth Logan and Kim Kinsley are co-chairing this event this year. Thank you Elizabeth and Kim! Elizabeth and Kim to speak. Elizabeth says that she and Kim have started work on this. There’ll be opportunities for the families and students to get involved to make the time special. Elizabeth will be contacting the parent reps to get the word out.
Ø      Do we need mints for the Science NECAP testing? If so, how many should be purchased?

ANY OTHER ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION?
Ø      Kelley is going to reach out to the 8th grade parent reps to get the ball rolling for promotion night.
Ø      Parents of upcoming 6th graders will be invited to our next PaP meeting.
Ø      6th grade info night on May 16.
