ANOTHER AWESOME BOOK FAIR AT ADL LAST WEEK!!!!!!
Another successful Book Fair is under our belts at ADL. Total sales for the four day sale were approximately $2500.00 which included about $41.00 by All For Books. This was used to purchase some books for the ADL Learning Center (Library) using the librarian's wishlist. We thank everyone for their contributions to the All For Books program this year.
The winner of the Golden Ticket raffle was 6th grader, Aidan Haggerty and he won the book of his choice. Congratulations Aidan!
Thank you to the peer leadership helpers who helped with set up, organization, poster making and other odd jobs to make our fair a success.
And, thank you to the students who also made posters with Caitlin Classen prior to the fair.
The fair could not be a success without our parent volunteers who help keep it running throughout the week. Thank you to each of you for all your help!
Thank you to Caitlin Classen for all her help with the fair and all her work generating enthusiasm for the fair, too!
Finally, a HUGE thank you to our Book Fair coordinators again this year, Chris Catterton and Tracey Williams! It could never have happened without all their hard work, expertise, coordination and enthusiasm! All of ADL thanks you both very much!
Happy Holidays to all!

Hello ADL Families!
On Saturday, October 26th beginning at 9 am and lasting until approximately 11:15 am, we will be doing our Beautification Projects for this year at ADL. We will be cleaning out the raised flower beds in the front of the school and adding soil to them as well as the raised beds in the back of the school. We will be planting bulbs and any plants anyone would like to donate to ADL as you are cleaning out your own flower beds at home. We are aiming for lots of color in the beds throughout the growing season. Bulbs and soil will be provided, but again if you have any at home you are looking to donate, please bring along. Bring your own shovels, rakes, gardening tools and wheelbarrows, etc. When we are finished, a light lunch will be provided. Please bring your students with you, but do not drop them off for them to be on their own. The students are great workers and this project will add to their pride in the ADL School. Let's hope for a sunny day! Hope to see everyone there! Thank you!

Looking for volunteers to help with activity breaks during NECAP week, Oct 8-10
Hi, Parents,
Principal Laurie Singer is hoping to get some additional parent help during the NECAP testing window of October 8-10. They're looking for some folks who would be willing to come in from 11:00-12:30 to help run/monitor activities for students -- maybe walking, recess, mat ball, art work, etc. The idea is that students get about an hour of activity as well as lunch for a nice break between the testing sessions. Help on one or more days will be appreciated.
If you're interested, please contact Mrs. Singer or Barb Edwards - http://www.ccsuvt.org/adl/staff-directory/.

Rodgers, Leah Joly
PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS:
We’ve had two days of school so
far this year. We’ve grown by about 17 students since last year. (Anecdote
about overflowing the bleachers this week.) One complexity is that the number
of students with IEPs has jumped significantly (IEP=Individual Education Plan).
The kickoff assembly was great,
and the students did a wonderful job. The peer leaders did a skit to introduce
the social contract. The students are building their social contract for the
year. When done, all the students will sign and commit for the year. In the
past, the kids have signed a large sheet of paper. This year, however, each
student will write a short statement on a slip of paper, and we’ll collect
those papers for display. The statements will also be available at the
student-led conferences.
Another part of the first
assembly was a time to describe the activities you could get involved in, and
they had a time where each student physically moved to a part of the gym to be
next to a sign for some activity to be involved in. No one was allowed to just
stay on the bleachers. Full-blown club sign-ups should start as early as next
week.
One other note is that the sixth
graders will be adding to the 1-to-1 device program, and they’ll be getting
Chromebooks. This group won’t be carrying them around just yet, but we hope to
grow in that direction.

Need 6th grade parent volunteers for 6th Grade Summer Olympics
Jamie Caron, one of our 6th grade teachers, writes:
The 6th Grade Summer Olympics, an ADL tradition, will take place Friday, June 14th from 9:30 to 12:00 (I know ... pretty late notice). We always need a few extra people to run an event and it would be great if we can get some parent volunteers. We only need a few. Let me know if you are interested (jcaron@ccsuvt.org).

had only sold about 10-15 tickets. This was our first time trying this kind of
thing. If we do this in the future,
we would need to brainstorm a better way to promote the sales.
Ø
The Promotion Night Committee continues to work
hard on the finishing touches for that evening! Thank you again to Patty LaRose-Kent for leading this
group. We also have 8 6th and 7th grade parents signed up
to handle the refreshments and punch for that evening.

McLaughlin will be working with me next year as my co-facilitator! I am so
pleased and feel this will be smooth transition for all of us!

The budget vote passed! This means we can move ahead with more “laptop”
computers for next year’s 6th-graders. We think we’ll shift to “Chrome
books” which are more current tech.
One of our ADL students, Drexel, won a Google Doodle prize for his
artwork, and we had a great assembly yesterday. He’s in the running now for a
national award, and we’re encouraging everyone to go vote.
We’re working on forming team assignments for next year, and we’re

OTHER
ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION?
Ø
Kevin Barber was contacted by the Vermont Lake Monsters about a way to
earn some money. The idea is to use the money to start building an account for
trips. The work is to get our parents to sell tickets. Each ticket sells for
$6, but we keep $3 of that. There’ll be a 3-week window to sell the tickets
starting on May 16th. We can sell them independently and also at our
events (concerts, track meets, etc., or even farmers’ market ...).
We’re looking for some parents who would be interested manning ticket sales at the events and/or take some to sell independently.
Laurie Singer will check on some more of the logistics, and we think we’ll work on lining up parents to help with this.

PRINCIPAL’S
ADDRESS:
§
We’ve done more work on the action plan to incorporate some of the action steps from the
improvement plan we wrote for the State to address a “check mark” in Math for
some students. We’re adjusting the way we’ll do summer school this year, and
we’ll focus it on two 2-week sessions – one session for 5-6 and one for 7-8 –
to help fill gaps and do some pre-teaching for the next grade level. We’ll
build some fun activities into the weeks.
§
Another area of concern from the fall NECAPs was our special ed
students, and we’ll be working to understand what more we can do to support
those students.
§
We’re beefing up the student leadership program to ensure they have a voice in how
things go.
§
We’re further adjusting our behavior programs to make them more incentive based (and not only
consequence based).
§
Looking ahead to next year, we’ll transition to
the new Common Core assessment base.
§
There’ll be more on School Report Night (June
6).

Invitation to parents to attend with an ADL team
the 4th Annual Parents, Educators and Principals Conference on March
14th at St. Michael’s College. This is a team of 4 or more people
and Laurie would love for our team to be over half parents. Let Laurie know if
you are interested in being part of the team.
Correction: This conference just got cancelled. We had several parents registered, but overall there weren’t enough. Hopefully, they’ll try again for next year.
