October 9th, 2014 PaP Meeting Minutes

Parents as Partners minutes 10.9.14

The meeting opened at 6:30 pm with eight in attendance including Coordinator Sathya Amouretti.
Principal Laurie Singer reports an amazing start to the school year.  The lack of a rush to prepare for NECAP exams has made a big difference in the atmosphere.  Students have had a Town Meeting to come together and share positive things that students and staff have done.  Each Team will have a turn planning and coordinating a Town Meeting over the course of the year.  The theme of this Town Meeting was Kindness, which relates to this year’s overall Wonder theme.  Team Alchemy will run the next Town Meeting on 11/17.

Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up next week, along with a limited-time opening of the PowerSchool program’s Parent Portal for parents to access information about their children’s progress on line.  ADL is looking into a different reporting program called Jump Rope that’s more compatible with standards-based assessments and may make more sense for the school in the future.  Parents appreciate all the time and effort teachers are putting into learning about PowerSchool and the reporting process with standards-based assessments.

The Prudential Committee will meet at ADL at 3:30 pm next Monday.

Assessment scores for last year’s 8th graders dropped significantly compared to previous years, and the staff is working on ways to make changes that will address some of the possible root causes of that result.

Seventh graders made posters for Empty Bowl Night, which is the culmination of an intensive study of hunger and homelessness.  Students make clay bowls to sell at the event, make soup and bread to serve, and create songs and raps to perform at the event.  They also visit Heavenly Pantry and have guest speakers who can bring a face to these issues.  Proceeds from the event go to local non-profits addressing hunger and homelessness.  This event happens on the same night as a band concert and the book fair.  Sathya will check with Mr. Sawyer to see if we still need desserts for after the concert.  Empty Bowls runs from 5:00-6:30, and the concert starts at 7:00.  Parents can visit the book fair before or after the concert.

The book fair is our only source of income.  We have the option to take part of the profit in Scholastic Dollars rather than real money, but the group decided to take the profits in real money only.  There’s a Scholastic promotion this year related to purchasing the right to wear a hat on a special “Hat Day,” with the proceeds going to book donations by Scholastic to a national organization.  Chris Catterton will get in touch with potential volunteers by e-mail to have people sign up for shifts.

Sweatshirt order:  order forms were handed out at lunch, information went out in announcements and in the Essex Reporter.

We’re looking for a technology person to help our Coordinator get messages out and facilitate communication.

The Snack Cart hasn’t started up yet because of a lack of volunteers.  One person per day is needed from 2:30-3:15.

We have enough volunteers for the dance, and snacks are all set for the Audubon trip.

Gabrielle Smith needs box tops before 10/23 for this round.  Barb will take them in the front office.

We had a technology information night last year and may repeat it in March.

September 4th, 2014 PaP Meeting minutes

Parents as Partners minutes 9.4.14

The meeting opened at 6:30pm with 23 in attendance in addition to our Coordinator and our Principal.

Coordinator Sathya Amouretti welcomed attendees and expressed her hope that we will have a fun year and facilitate some fun activities for the kids.  She reinforced that Parents as Partners is not a fundraising organization.  Its primary focus is to coordinate activities and opportunities for students.  The group does get financial support from the annual book fair and the after-school snack cart.

Principal Laurie Singer also welcomed attendees.  The Parents as Partners page on the ADL web site includes how-to for all of the group’s usual activities and events to make it easier for new facilitators to jump in.

She reports that we’ve had a very smooth start to the school year.  Students are immersed in a Year of Wonder, with themes focused on kindness, diversity, and acceptance of others.  In May students will go out into the community for service learning projects.  This year’s social contract for the school will come from student suggestions based on the book’s themes.

ADL will not have NECAPs this year – students will take the SBAC (Smarter Balance Assessment) instead, which is totally online and has a responsive component that will play off of student answers to make the testing more rigorous and more specific to each student.  This year’s students won’t have a Common Core foundation, so scoring may look low as a result.

The Powerschool Parent Portal will become available to parents sometime this year.  Progress reports will assess habits of learning more than content and grades.  The portal will be open at the end of the first trimester.  The goal is for each student to be “Secure” in each content area by the end of the year.  Some standards are only assessed in one of the three trimesters, some are assessed in each trimester.  Benchmark rubrics will be included to indicate what each assessment level means for each subject.  Students will self-assess as a way to create personal goals.

Sathya welcomed Diana Ferguson, the Executive Director of Essex CHiPS.  The group works directly with youth and also works on community initiatives related to teen issues.  The Teen Center opens on 9/9 and is open after school from 3-5:30.  Tween Center for 4th and 5th graders has more structure.  Teen Center is a more open format.   New this year the Center will have a quiet space for homework and staff who can help with homework.   Participants will also have the opportunity to work on community service projects and.  6th-8th graders nominated by school staff can participate in a program called FriendCHiPS, which is a mentoring program with adults with similar interests.  Essex CHiPS has some federal funding that will end after this year that can be devoted to programs for parents.  They would like input about how to use those funds – guest speakers?  Workshops?  Support for school initiatives?

Sathya reports that she registered ADL at Price Chopper.  We’re also registered at Hannaford, which has a program through December 6 that gives school funding points for purchasing particular products.  Gabrielle Smith will be the coordinator for the box tops program who can work twice a year to cut out box tops and make sure they’re not expired.  Chris Catterton is willing to coordinate the book fair again, and could use the help of a 6th grade parent to learn the ropes.  Leah Joly volunteered as the sweatshirt sale coordinator who would collect the order forms, get them over to the printer, and then pick up the sweatshirts.  The snack shack will be affected by the new federal policy related to food in schools.  Approved items are more expensive than what the cart has charged in the past.  To keep the shack items the same the sale wouldn’t be able to start until 30 minutes after the end of school.

First dance will happen on 9/19.  Nikki and Lori will work on the snacks for the dance.

Team representatives:  Teachers can contact reps to contact other parents for special needs for trips and other special events.  Parents as Partners will provide contact information for parents who have volunteered to provide items when needed.

I goofed up the date for next week's meeting!  It's Thursday, June 5th, not the 6th!  So sorry!

Kelley
Hello ADL Parents and Guardians!

This is my final blog as Co-facilitator of Parents as Partners after 5 years of having a student at ADL.  I will no longer have a child here in the fall, so I am moving on.

Thank you to each of your for making this job easier.  Your willingness to volunteer and help out when it was needed certainly made the facilitating smoother!  I am forever grateful!

I will certainly miss ADL.  Please always say hi to me if you run into me over at EHS or at the supermarket, even!  Thank you for allowing me to work in our school community in this capacity.  It has been a rewarding experience for me.

Our final Parents as Partners meeting will be next Thursday, June 6th at 6:30 pm in the ADL Learning Center (Library).  It will finish up at 7:00 and at that time, School Report Night presented by Principal Laurie Singer will begin.  This is an evening full of tying up loose ends and hearing important information about ADL from our Principal.  Please plan to join us, even if this is your first time!

Thank you!

G.A.S.P. Sign-ups Almost Complete

The 7th-grade parents get the prize this year for filling all the cake sign-up slots. We nearly have all the on-site volunteer slots filled, too, so a big thanks to everyone who's pitching in already!

The remaining needs are a few cakes from the 6th- and 8th-grade parents and a couple people who'd like to help in the cafeteria during the party ("food meisters"). We need only six more cakes to be all set. Remember, this is all supposed to be fun, so please give some thought to pitching in and enjoying yourself with this. You can find our sign-up form here (or below).

If you have questions, please write to Paul McLaughlin (see the 'contact' link on the sign-up form).

Calling Volunteers and Bakers for the March 2014 G.A.S.P. Party

The sign-up form is ready for the annual Games And Sports Party set for Friday, March 14. We'll continue the tradition of outrageous cakes, but if you're not a baker you can still plug in to help on site.

We're hoping to get ten cakes from each grade. Make these fun!! People often try to outdo each other with creative theme cakes ... though we also love the store-bought cakes. Some students like to bake cakes, too.

You can find the volunteer sign-up form here or use the link below. If you'll be helping on site, please be sure you submit a CCSU volunteer form if you haven't done so already this year.

If you have questions, please write to Paul McLaughlin (see 'contact' link on the the sign-up form).

WELCOME-Happy New Year All!
Attendees: Paul McLaughlin, Mindy Diesler, Amie Conger, DeAnn Charron, Laurie Singer, Leah Joy.
PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS: Laurie will discuss standards based learning and reporting and Amie Conger, Assistant Principal will review newest draft of discipline system at ADL.
  • Laurie shared about standards-based reporting. We looked through two articles describing why we want to go to standards-based reporting. If you find anyone with questions, Laurie encourages them to contact her.
  • As a school, we've designed a new report card based on the Common Core standards. You can search the web for “Common Core” to learn more about the standards. Even if it's a subject without CC standards, you can still find a national standard that applies. The standards help shape the curriculum from one grade to the next and helps teachers know what instruction has already occurred. They give us an idea of how a student is progressing relative to a standard (strengths/weaknesses). There'll be a separate area for work habits and behaviors. It helps bring consistency between teachers.
  • Laurie expects to post a presentation about all this on our ADL website.
  • Amie Conger shared about an upcoming project related to discipline and positive school community. We're looking at going through a book together as a school throughout the next school year: Wonder by RJ Palacio. The themes and activities in the book contribute to our social contract themes. We got a grant that's already providing 70 of these books, but we're looking for ways to fund enough books so that everyone in the school can have one (i.e., another 320). There are several other projects that we'd like to tie in.
Paul or Kelley will send out a note to the PaP folks to see what kind of support we can give.
FINANCIAL REPORT: As of January 6, 2014, we have a balance of $2900.81. Parents as Partners gave $200.00 towards the fee to bring Jeh Kulu back to ADL again for a performance at the finale of the Winter Olympics unit. Jeh Kulu is a multicultural performance and educational ensemble specializing in music and dance from Guinea, Senegal and Mali. They are located in Burlington. When they were here before, the students absolutely loved them!
Approximately $194.00 was spent on Beautification Day for bulbs, soil and lunch. Approximately $625.00 was made during the Book Fair, $64.50 was made with sweatshirt sales and the first Box Tops deposit for the school year was also deposited. This was a check for $85.80.
ROLLING CALENDAR: January:
1/13: Final Technology Information Meeting 6:30-7:30 pm
1/17: Early release for students at 12:00 pm (noon)
1/20: NO SCHOOL-TEACHER INSERVICE
1/22-1/24: School Wide Winter Olympics Event.
Families are invited to the opening activities right after the lunches on the 22nd. We can use several parent volunteers on Thursday, the 23rd. On Friday, we'll have our closing ceremony in the afternoon, and families are again invited.
1/24: Dance 7-9 pm
1/29: 8th Grade Orientation at EHS 8:30-10:30 am
1/29: Bridge Band Concert at ADL with 8th grade and EHS bands 7-9 pm
February:
2/4: Parent/Guardian meeting for Incoming 9th grade students at EHS Auditorium 7-9 pm
Dance dates: 3/7(8th grade only with EMS, Westford at EMS), 4/4, 5/16
PaP dates: 2/6, 3/6,* 6/5 with School Report Night *Please note date change from 4/3 to 3/6
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Date for Empty Bowls? Thursday, April 10.
  • Formation of GASP Committee (GASP is on March 14 this year) [Paul & Kelley will work on this further]
  • I have emailed Kevin Barber to see if he is in need of PaP’s assistance to round up volunteers for the Basketball Tournament. I have not received a reply yet.
Follow Up Business:
  • How did NECAP testing and conferences go? Great turn-out at the conferences.
  • Beautification Day follow-up … to continue in the future? The two raised beds in front of the school were moved back and plants were moved and bulbs were planted in all four beds in the front of the school. Not well attended. We did enjoy a delicious lunch together.
We're thinking the light turn-out might have been due to the timing (fall instead of spring). Let's keep planning on doing these for now and revisit the plans before we wind up for the year.
  • Book Fair follow-up, set next year’s dates, Spring Fair this year? Total sales for 4 days: $2511.72 which includes $40.96 raised by All for Books. Th$40.96 was used to purchase some books for the Learning Center/Library. Total cash profit was approximately $625.00. The Golden Ticket raffle book was won by 6th grader, Aidan Haggerty … a book of his choice. Thank you to Peer Leadership helpers, student poster makers, Caitlin Classen and all the parent volunteers who helped make the Book Fair another big success this year. A HUGE thank you to Chris Catterton and Tracey Williams for again organizing this Book Fair this year. Chris plans to update the How-To document, as well.
We decided not to try to have a spring fair this year. We don't have the dates for the concerts yet, but we expect to figure that out around March.
  • Thank you very much to Renee Dezotelle for coordinating sweatshirt sales again this year and also to Barb Edwards for helping her with the financial end and handing out the sweatshirts right before the Holiday Break.
  • Dates for Guest Speakers?
Please remember to continue to turn in Box Tops to the front office.
Once again, we are signed up in the Price Chopper Tools for Schools program. Please go onto to www.pricechopper.com to enroll your Advantedge card points to be assigned to ADL and we will receive enough points at the end of the school year to “purchase” some art supplies that the entire school gets to use.
